The House of the Wolf - Icon

141. THE HOUSE OF THE WOLF - Icon - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on a 11 x 14 size coquille board. This icon drawing appears on the title page of the book, "THE HOUSE OF THE WOLF," by Basil Copper.

"Icons," also called "spot" drawings, usually appear somewhere in a book as small decorations. I usually draw them small, typically 3 x 5 inches, but for this book I made all 42 chapter icons much larger, about 6 x 9 inches. I explain why in my remarks for drawing No.140.

I doubt that many illustrators in the past, or even nowadays, think about their drawings the way I did, I always had the science fiction and fantasy fans in mind, those who really appreciate art and often buy original artwork from their favorite illustrators. The greatest compliment you can pay an artist is to buy his artwork and hang it on a wall in your home. So, even though publication requirements were often detrimental to a pictures composition, I tried to make my drawing large enough to satisfy a viewer, and designed it to look good in a frame, just in case someone bought it.
