In Lovecraft's Shadow - Endpaper

308. IN LOVECRAFT'S SHADOW: Endpaper - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears on the endpapers of the book, "In Lovecraft's Shadow," by August Derleth.

I have always been disappointed in fantasy and science fiction fans for not supporting the few small press publishers, like August Derleth, whose bust I featured on the endpaper design that you see here. He established Arkham House and was the first to publish the works of H.P. Lovecraft in hardcovers. He also published Ray Bradbury's first book, "Dark Carnival". All the books he published in the 1940s and 1950s are now collector's items that sell at high prices.

Although all the other small presses, like Gnome Press, Fantasy Press, FPCI, Prime Press, and Shasta, are long gone, went out of business for lack of sales, only Arkham House still remains, publishing books now and then in small editions.
